Confusion often arises between outcomes and competencies, particularly within the simulation environment. Traditionally, assessments and simulations have been designed for specific outcomes in summative settings. However, many professional accreditation standards now emphasize competencies as indicators of student readiness for clinical practice and professional work. This shift requires programs to redefine and redevelop their assessments, moving away from outcome completion as the primary marker of student readiness. This transition from outcome-based to competency-based assessment presents both challenges and opportunities.
This presentation will explore the differences between outcome-based and competency-based simulations. It will focus on strategies for shifting the assessment paradigm from outcomes to competencies and demonstrate how advanced simulations can help learners achieve higher levels of competency throughout their educational programs, beyond individual courses or simulations.

The presentation really helped me fit competency into the process while recognizing the cognitive part of the process. Knowing all of the facts, figures, and history does not make one competent. They also need to be able to DO and LEAD. Rating
The passion of the presenter and how clearly he was able to articulate the CBE and how to integrate it into simulation. It changed my mindset from outcomes to competency. Applying change to current practice and integrating strategies to improve simulation practice.
This is the 2nd webinar (one not from EMS) I’ve attended on the topic of competency based assessment and this one was extremely helpful with how to transition to this model of assessment and not just stating why it’s a good idea. It gave actionable information to take and start working toward in our institution.
The webinar brought more critical thinking and competency skill to sims. Particularly it helped me understand better the role of Competency Based Learning versus Outcome Learning and how to incorporate assessment tools appropriately.
I have a few comments to include
• Dr. Rosco’s statement about student’s who graduate before they are competent. I agree it is on the instructor, not the student.
• Excellent information on how to link EOP SLO to competencies. Great examples.
• Understanding the difference between competency and outcome and especially remediation. Changed my mindset from outcomes to competency.

Now I get it, thank you!
