Creating a Simulation-Based Signature Assignment to Assess AACN Competencies in One of the Four Spheres of Care

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) requires nurse educators to deliver competency-based education, focusing on assessing what students know and can do. Educational programs must also ensure nursing students participate in all spheres of care: wellness/disease prevention, chronic disease care, regenerative/restorative care, and hospice/palliative care. Simulations are an ideal method of assessing student competencies. During this webinar, the speakers will share practical strategies for developing and delivering competency-based simulations in the context of the four spheres of care in undergraduate nursing programs.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain how backward design can be applied to the competency -based simulation development across the four spheres of care.
  2. Outline the process of developing a signature assignment, using simulation in one of the four spheres of care.
  3. Apply competency-based assessment strategies to evaluate student performance in undergraduate simulation for nursing students.
