Session Overview

Overview:

Healthcare education students must be equipped to handle challenging student interactions in both one-on-one and classroom settings. While strategies for classroom management are often taught didactically, opportunities to practice these skills in a safe, structured environment are limited during graduate training. This presentation will highlight the development and implementation of a scaffolded simulation program designed for Master of Science in Nursing Education (MNE) students to practice crucial conversations within a psychologically safe environment.

Through a progressive model over multiple courses, students build communication skills essential for addressing complex learner behaviors in academic and clinical settings. Students initially engage in simulated one-on-one meetings addressing common challenges with a standardized “learner.”

As the students progress through the courses, foundational skills are built upon utilizing higher-stakes scenarios, culminating in a classroom-based simulation. Feedback from students regarding the simulations has been overwhelmingly positive. Students value the opportunity to apply didactic content in realistic scenarios with real-time feedback from standardized learners. Lessons learned regarding logistics, role preparation, and program integration will also be shared, along with practical recommendations for implementing a similar program at other institutions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learners will describe the essential components of a scaffolded curriculum for practicing crucial conversations in healthcare education.
  2. Learners will review specific simulation scenarios, implementation logistics, and lessons learned form the program.
  3. Learners will develop preliminary learning objectives and simulation ideas for implementing a similar curriculum at their home institution.

About the presenter: Dena Higbee established a Mobile Simulation training program in 2011 that continues to serve the state of Missouri and consults with others in starting mobile simulation programs across the country. Dena is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. She is a member of the Central Group on Educational Affairs, Association of SP Educators (served 4 years as Vice President of Finance), SimGHOSTS, and the Society of Simulation in Healthcare.
